Where I'm From
Petersburg, Alaska
Where I've Lived
I grew up in a small island town in Southeast Alaska called Petersburg. I went to high school in southern California, and college in New York City. I also spent time studying abroad in Austria and Italy.
My Dance Training
I grew up dancing in a small local studio in my hometown. When I was 16 I went to Idyllwild Arts Academy, a pre-professional boarding school for the arts in Southern California. I was pushed in my dance technique by Anne Krampen, Jean-Marie Martz, and Deborah Brockus. After high school, I went to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts directed by Linda Tarney and fell in love with modern dance. There was no looking back from there.
My Dance Experience
Parr Project Dance, Stefanie Nelson Dance Group, LaneCoArts, expandance, Doug Elkins and Friends, Shen Wei Dance Arts, Nora Reynolds-Daniel, Deborah Brockus, Stefanie Gilliland
Other Work Experience
Full time yoga teacher, technology specialist for Apple Inc.
Method For Treating Body Soreness
What I wouldn't do for a bathtub in my apartment! Since I'm pretty constantly in motion, I'm not usually sore, but when it does pop up, a slow paced yoga class, followed by a hot shower and some self massage do the trick.
A Dance Injury
I recently sprained my wrist during a hard landing in a performance. It took almost six weeks to heal and it was a reminder to take care of my self and slow down, it really made teaching yoga and taking class hard.
Other Passions & Interests
I love to learn languages, travel to new places, and go on adventures. Nature and the outdoors are in my veins because I'm an Alaska child, so it's always very important for me to connect with that. I'm a full time yoga teacher, and I'm fascinated with the study of eastern philosophy, I think it's what the world needs right now.
A Cool Place I Visited While Dancing on a Tour
I performed a solo in an old theatre in Alba, Italy many years ago, and still remember the feeling of the Italian audiences standing up and yelling, "Ancora, Ancora, Bravo, Bravo!" It was magical and still makes me smile.
My Favorite Rehearsal Snack
I'm a big fan of dried cranberries, walnuts, and dark chocolate.
Music I Warm Up To
I give myself a full yoga class to warm up, and not going to lie, usually am blasting pop music.
Why do you dance?
"dance, dance otherwise we are lost" - Pina Bausch
What do you love about dancing?
That the challenges, joys, and rewards of being a dancer extend way beyond the rehearsal studio or stage. And it's certainly never boring.
What's the hardest part of being a dancer?
Finding balance.
